Foreword
(from the book)
Once in a while a book is
written that stands the test of time. I first heard
about Wake UP and Live! when I was listening to a
cassette tape by Earl Nightengale called, The
Strangest Secret. When I heard about the book, I
had to get my hands on it. I did a lot of searches
for the title and the author. All I could find were
used copies (not a surprise) and they were all
pretty costly. The original book was published in
1936 and has been out of print for a long time.
Some time later I heard
about Wake Up and Live! again and this time I broke
down, spent the money, and got myself of copy of
this little gem. It's not a very large book and has
large print on the pages so it was a fast and easy
read for me. What struck me was just how relevant
much of what Dorothea Brande wrote over 70 years
ago still was - from personal success to education.
Her book was packed with so
much wisdom and advice that I wanted it to be
available to more people. It may be the simplicity
of the lessons, or it may be that her process just
plain makes sense that has given the book the power
that it has.
I preparing the manuscript
of this book, I got to immerse myself in the
material again. With every reading, I am struck by
how much any person who reads Wake Up and Live!,
and who applies the Twelve Diciplines to their own
life, can change their circumstances with seemingly
little effort.
Dorothea Brande calls it
magical. It's not, though it may sem that way. The
process makes sense and produces results. It's as
simple as that.
Take the time to read the
book and, I encourage you to do exactly what
Dorothea Brande suggested make this book
your own and write in the margins.
If you follow her advice, I
am sure you will see results in your
life.
About the Author:
Dorothea
Brande (1893-1948) was a
well respected writer and editor in New York. She
was born in Chicago and attended the University of
Chicago, the Lewis Institute in Chicago (later
merged with Armour Institute of Technology to
become Illinois Institute of Technology), and the
University of Michigan. Her book Becoming a Writer,
published in 1934, is still in print and offers
advice for beginning and sustaining any writing
enterprise. She also wrote Wake Up and Live,
published in 1936, which sold over two million
copies. It was made into a musical by Twentieth
Century Fox in 1937.
While she was serving as
associate editor of The American Review in 1936,
she married that journal's owner and editor, Seward
Collins. Collins was a prominent literary figure in
New York and a proponent of an American version of
fascism, which he explored in The American
Review.
Dorothea (Brande) Collins
died in New Hampshire.
